What is SORA?

The Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) is a risk assessment methodology developed by the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) WG-6 to support drone operations in the Specific category, which require the development of an operational risk assessment prior to conducting an operation. It is recommended by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) as Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) to Article 11 of Commission Implementing EU Regulation 947/2019 for operations in the Specific category. SORA is public and can be downloaded at this link.

What is the relationship between SORA and SAMWISE?

SAMWISE uses the publicly available information about SORA and transforms it into a guided procedure that helps you carry out your assessments without the need to continuously refer to the official SORA documentation.

Where is SORA applicable?

SORA is accepted by many Civil Aviation Authorities of EU Member States and non-EU CAAs to support the operational risk assessment of UAS operations.

What is SAMWISE?

SAMWISE is a web-based tool that provides support to prepare a safety assessment of drone operations in the Specific category according to the SORA methodology.

What does SAMWISE do?

SAMWISE guides the operator through all the steps of the risk assessment following the SORA methodology. By providing the details of a drone operation, SAMWISE quickly evaluates its feasibility and identifies the related technical and operational requirements. In addition, SAMWISE PRO supplies the operator with the completed report of the analysis, including the certification of the mitigations carried out.

Who created SAMWISE?

SAMWISE was created by EuroUSC Italia, a leading consultancy company in the field of drone regulations and safety. EuroUSC Italia has a consolidated experience on SORA: it was one of the members of the JARUS group that developed the methodology and since 2016 it offers different kinds of courses related to it.

Why do I need SAMWISE?

SAMWISE can help you in quickly understanding the feasibility of your drone operation before you start preparing a full safety assessment. Once obtained the final report, the operator will be able to apply for an authorisation to fly.

Can I use SAMWISE to submit an application to my Civil Aviation Authority?

SAMWISE provides support in preparing the safety assessment for your application. However, the output of the analysis or the information contained in the final report should always be reviewed before the submission to the CAA. If you need assistance to draft a complete safety assessment or you need an independent evaluation of your compliance with the requirements, you can contact EuroUSC Italia at info@eurousc-italia.it for a dedicated quotation.

Do I have to download the tool to perform the assessment?

No, SAMWISE is an online tool. You need to sign in to “Registration”, set up your profile, choose the subscription plan that is right for you and start your risk assessment.
